Press Club welcomes new, narrower closed-meeting rule and preservation of the Idaho Open Meeting Law (April 4th, 2006)
The Idaho Press Club welcomes the decision today by the state Senate to
adopt new, much more restrictive rules on when committee meetings can
be closed, and to amend a bill that sought to repeal a section of the
Idaho Open Meeting Law regarding legislative committee meetings.
Instead, senators agreed to an amendment proposed by the Press Club, to
simply amend the section to reflect the new rule and preserve the Open
Meeting Law. Read more...
Divided Idaho Supreme Court rules 3-2 against openness (March 20th, 2006)
Obviously we are very disappointed in the decision but we think it
opens the door to the right way to conduct Legislative business, and
that is in the open,” said Press Club President Betsy Russell. Even the
majority decision stated that important public policy concerns suggest
openness is the right way to go. The dissent, which was supported by
two of the five justices, said that’s what the constitution requires.
Since the lawsuit was filed there has not been a single closed meeting
of a legislative committee. If this case prompts the Legislature to
look at how it operates and be more open to the citizens, then it was
well worth it.”
