IPC steps up training opportunities

Press Club spring training draws crowd; more in the works

The Idaho Press Club sponsored a full weekend of free training for our members the weekend of this year’s annual awards banquet, and both the Saturday and Sunday sessions April 27-28 were high-quality and well-attended.

On Saturday, we held the 2nd annual Institute for Journalists on Covering the Courts, in collaboration with Attorneys for Civic Education, the Idaho Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, the U.S. District Court for the District of Idaho and the University of Idaho College of Law.

Presenters ranged from journalists Rebecca Boone, Melissa Davlin and Betsy Russell to Idaho Supreme Court Justices Robyn Brody and Greg Moeller, UI Professor of Law Emeritus Don Burnett, and U.S. District Judges David Nye and Lynn Winmill. Also addressing the institute were Clerk of the U.S. District Court Steve Kenyon; Administrative Director of the Idaho Courts Sara Thomas; former U.S. Attorney Wendy Olson; Ada County Prosecutor Jan Bennetts; defense attorney Scott McKay; Deputy Attorney General Brian Kane; and more.

More than 30 journalists attended this eye-opening session, including reporters, editors and photographers from TV, print, online and student media.

On Sunday, we hosted SBJ Google Tools Trainer Daniel Petty for two two-hour sessions on how journalists and editors can use Google Tools for reporting and storytelling. This session, too, was well-attended and proved highly useful, equipping all participants with new skills and tricks that help us get information, add depth to our reporting and save time in our everyday work.
Recognizing the importance of training to our Idaho Press Club membership, the Press Club board this spring established a new Training Committee, which is chaired by board member Audrey Dutton. We are open to your ideas about training you’d like to see for journalists in Idaho! Please let us know; you can send your ideas to email@idahopressclub.org.

Thanks to all who worked so hard on this year’s training opportunities and are working on more for us in the future!
